Trend or staple?

When spring and summer roll around, you can almost guarantee at least a couple of trends will show up in stores including florals, lace/crochet, and nautical. But since these trends are pretty much a given, year after year, are they still considered a trend or are they more of a fashion staple? I say that there can be trendy pieces that incorporate one of those staples (floral dresses in trendy shapes; shirts covered in anchors, etc.) but overall they're more of a staple. Nautical stripes, floral prints and lace pieces in classic shapes will carry over from season to season without looking dated.
