We Must Be Like The Trees
This past weekend was tough for this county. Donald Trump was sworn in as the President of the United States, and the following day millions of women around the country (and even the world!) joined together to march for women's issues and rights. My own personal Facebook feed was pretty positive in reacting to the women's marches, but there is a number of people who found the whole march insulting and disgusting. They say things like "They need to give Trump a chance first" and "women have rights" but here's the thing....
This march wasn't JUST about Trump, although he's certainly a catalyst for this entire movement. It's so much more than Trump.
-It's about his Vice-President, who while governor of Indiana, tried to pass a law that would require women to have burials for their unborn babies regardless of whether the pregnancy ended due to abortion or a miscarriage
-It's about politicians who post offensive "jokes" on their Facebook profile
-This is about a president who bragged about grabbing women inappropriately
-This is about a president who, less than a week into his term, has already signed an executive order making it difficult for women and girls in other countries get safe abortions
-This is about a Republican party who's agenda continues to alienate anyone who's not a white, 1%, Evangelical male
-This is about Trump's choice to head the Education Department who thinks that guns should be in schools because of the threat of grizzly bears
-This is about a Democratic party who had their ego so inflated, so sure that'd they'd make history by putting the first woman in the White House as president, that did whatever it took, including harming the chances of the candidate who actually could have won against Trump #FeelTheBern
-It's about every man who raped a woman because she was drunk or wore a revealing piece of clothing
-It's about women who make approximately 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes doing the same work
-It's about women who tear down other women because they're insecure, scared, or whatever
-It's about gays, lesbians, transgender, bisexual and queer folk who don't feel like they matter or have a place in this world because they don't fit the "status quo"
I could go on and on, about both sides really but that's not what this post is about. My point is this, we're a country divided, we're angry, hurt and feel that our side or point-of-view is right and the other side is 1000% wrong. But as Abe Lincoln once said....
The only way this country will endure is if we can learn to support our fellow Americans, regardless of their gender, race, religion, whatever. We need to be more like the trees of the forests. In a recent episode the NPR program the 'TED Radio Hour' there was a talk with ecologist Suzanne Simard, who discovered that trees use an underground network to communicate and share resources. It's a fascinating topic, and made me realize that we as people could take a clue from the trees. Communication and support, so that we all might group big and strong.
