A Round Peg In A Square Hole

I've been thinking about blogging about this topic for a while but honestly I haven't had the nerve as it is a personal topic. Let me preface this by saying that I know my situation is not unique and there are others out there in the same situation. But I feel like I need to post something, if anything else it may help others in the same situation know they aren't alone.

I AM A RECENT COLLEGE GRAD WITH NO JOB PROSPECTS

To be honest, that statement isn't entirely true. Back in 2008 when I was a fresh graduate with my Bachelors degree there weren't any jobs. I called and emailed everyone I knew, and several that I didn't but I got nowhere. Eventually I decided to go to graduate school and get my Masters. I figured the extra education couldn't hurt, I could hone my skills and hopefully gain some experience. Fast forward to now, I have my Masters in Media Arts & Science from Indiana University and the job market is in better shape. Since graduation I have been scouring the Internet and tapping as many resources as I can in finding employment that would utilize at least some of the skills I've developed.

The problem I find now is that I've come across dozens of potential job opportunities but have yet to get more than ONE interview. Quite frustrating I tell you. I've changed up my resume and portfolio but I can't seem to find anyone to give me a chance. You know how you've heard on TV and probably on the Internet about people (usually fellow recent graduates like me) say that "All the employers want someone with experience, but how can I get experience if no one will hire me?" That's me in a nutshell.

I've been trying to keep an open mind, looking for positions that might not use all of my skills right away but at least get me in the door somewhere and from there I can build upon my educational experience. But alas, I have yet to find the right position...or is it the other way around and the right position hasn't found me? The things is many of the positions, in my mind at least, would be good a fit for me. They may not be the perfect job but it would better than where I am now. I'm still employed at the college retail job. It pays the bills but it is not a place where I can utilize any of my skills and any growth opportunities would be in a completely different field than what I went to college for. And don't I'm not grateful to have a job. My currently employer has been great about working with me while I went to college and I've made some great friends there, but now it's time for me to move on.

As it is I'm still searching and talking to people. I have people tell me all the time, "The right job will come along when it's supposed to." I'm sorry but it's frustrating to hear that...but I know that those who say it are my friends and are just trying to keep my spirits up. So I'm not giving up! With each resume I send out I try and keep hope that this time someone will see it and say, "Hey, let's give her a shot. I bet she'd be a great assest to our company." And I believe I would be. Yes I lack experience, but I make up for it in enthusiasm, loyalty and an eagerness to learn. And one day (hopefully soon!) I'll be able to post on this blog that I've finally found a job in my chosen field. But until then......

  1. I know it sucks but hang in there. At least you're getting an interview. I know lots of people that don't even get that. I hope something turns up for you and everyone else out there with tons of talent and education just waiting for the right opportunity to find them. *hugs*

    1. I know, it's depressing though. I've had ONE interview, ONE! And that was back in July. I've applied for several jobs since then and have gotten nothing! But I appreciate your words of encouragement though. In the words of Dorie, "Just keep swimming!"
