Random Thoughts While Watching The Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Since the weather turned to crap, I've taken advantage of our Netflix account and have been watching the OG series of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The Power Rangers were my JAM when I was a kid, so binging the series has made me feel like I'm 10 years old again. But now that I'm a little older I'm more aware of just how weird this show was (but still awesome!).....

Angel Grove must be the wealthiest city on the planet, it was getting destroyed on almost a weekly basis

I've met a number of the cast, and while some look so young on the screen, others haven't aged a day (what's your secret Amy Jo?)

Tommy Oliver, bestill my little 10 year-old heart

Both Rita and Lord Zedd are terrible at trying to take over the world, but I guess if they were better at it, we wouldn't have a show

Good help really is hard to find, but hiring new henchmen all the time is harder work

Why did they make the movie if it isn't cannon? Was Ivan Ooze that bad?

I wonder if the cast avoided wearing their respective Ranger color in their real lives

Bulk and Skull were idiots, but they did get the Rangers out of a scrape more than once and at least deserved some credit

I really wanted a MegaZord toy, I still do. But I imagine it'd cost me a pretty penny now

My 2017 Convention Schedule

My 2017 convention schedule

I JUST wrapped up the convention season a few weeks ago, and here I am already looking towards 2017. There's some tried and true favorites (I'm looking at you Pop Con!) and possibly some new ones (details are still being worked out). Of course other opportunities are likely to pop up, so I guess I'll need to be prepared for anything (starting my with arm's length list of cosplay stuff....)

I can't keep calm my cosplay isn't finished

working on // Plans for the podcast and several new cosplays for 2017.

wishing // I was going to either Walt Disney World or Disneyland for our anniversary in December. But we've both used up all of our vacation time with all those trips earlier in the year. #FirstWorldProblems But we did get to go to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, which still counts in my book!

My journey into cosplay

One of my first cosplays: Clara from Doctor Who "The Bells of St. John"
One of my first cosplays: Clara from Doctor Who "The Bells of St. John"

I've only been attending conventions on a regular basis since mid-2013, and from early on I learned that there is a significant percentage of con-goers who participate in the hobby of cosplay. As most people, I dressed up for Halloween when I was a kid, but gave it up as I got older. I appreciated everyone's efforts and enjoyed other people's cosplays when I went to events like GenCon or Chicago TARDIS, but I never really thought of doing it myself (aside from photo above which was for a viewing of "The Day of the Doctor" and the photo below for Halloween the same year).

At some point though I got bit by the cosplay bug and decided to attempt cosplaying at a con in 2015. It was thrown together with stuff I already had in my closet and a cheap wig from the party store. I really had no idea what I was doing, but I had fun.

Bad wig and terrible makeup *shudders* Everyone has to start somewhere though

Since then I've learned a bit more about cosplay and how to improve. I've got a nice collection of cosplays that I wear now. But I'm always looking for new cosplay ideas, and my current list of planned/want to do cosplays is constantly growing. But we'll get into that in another post.

That one time I was accidentally racist....

Just double-checking that your Obama costume will involve a mask and not shoe polish

With Halloween coming up, the social medias start to ramp up with articles and videos reminding everyone that cultural appropriation during Halloween (and really any time of year) is not cool. Now this is a very controversial topic, because there's the camp that thinks that it isn't a big deal/people are too PC and the camp that finds it offensive. Personally I'm in second group, I think things perpetuate stereotypes are offensive and need to stop, especially blackface which is one of the most offensive of them all.

I think a lot of the people who don't see what the big deal is, aren't racist themselves, but uneducated in the history of cultural appropriation and oppression. I myself was guilty of this once, when one Halloween I did my own version of blackface. Now this was waaaaaayyyyy back in the early/mid-90's, not long after the movie Sister Act has been released.

Sister Act movie poster

I fell in love with the movie, the comedy and the music spoke to my inner thespian. So for Halloween I thought it would be cool to be Sister Mary Clarence. So I got a cheap nun's habit costume, and proceeded to use dark makeup to make me look more like Whoopi. In my mind, I wanted to make sure people knew I was Sister Mary Clarence, not just any old nun. At the time I was 9-10 years old, so really too young to understand I was in the wrong and while out trick-or-treating people knew exactly who I was and approved so to me, I was successful. It wasn't till YEARS later that I realized what I had done was essentially a form of blackface and totally not cool.

Of course these days I wouldn't think of doing blackface or anything else that would perpetuate a negative stereotype of a culture (which is really where the offence comes from). So while as a society we can seem to be uber-sensitive and PC these days, it doesn't hurt to give your Halloween costume choice a second or third thought.

I Don't Have A Favorite Holiday

Just thought i'd mimic retailers by wishing you a Merry Christmas before Thanksgiving

Something strange happens every year around mid-September on my Facebook feed. I'm suddenly inundated with two very distinct populations of people....the people who are super excited for Halloween and the people who are super excited for Christmas. And I get it, people are totally allowed to get excited over their favorite holiday, but I can't say I understand where they are coming from. My husband LOVES Halloween, I have a friend who LOVES the 4th of July, I have friends who LIVE for Christmas.

Me, I couldn't care less really. I mean, I'm not a party-pooper and I still participate in the festivities of whatever holiday it might be, but I just don't LOVE any of them. I have things I like about all of them, but there isn't one that's my favorite.

It's October you know what that means.....Merry Christmas!

Is that weird? Or are my other friends just fanatics? Does it even matter? In the grand scheme of things, probably not. Really as long as there is food/candy to eat, I'm down.

Give the amount of food I plan to gorge on this year, I'm not confident in the integrity of this chair's construction

Bucket list item CHECKED!

So while I have my 40 before 40 bucket list (that I've not made much progress on recently). I did check a big one of my overall life bucket list:

Chauncey and I with Stan Lee

That's right, I met freaking STAN LEE! We drove over to Ohio for the Cincinnati Comic Expo where Stan Lee was a guest. Stan has said that he's going to start limiting his convention appearances starting next year, so this was a now-or-never opportunity. It made for a long day, and we were exhausted by the end, but it was so worth it! I went into full detail of the day and what I thought of the con on this week's Five(ish) Fangirls Podcast, so check it out!

Am I Coming Or Am I Going?

How is it May September already? Like really, where did almost half all of the year go? I swear we just put our Christmas decorations up! I have been so busy this year it's nuts! I've had work, traveling all over (I'm sure I have enough airline miles accrued for Disney later this year next year), helping my BFF plan (and be in) her wedding being in my BFF's wedding, birthdays, anniversaries, doctor's appointments.....I feel like I need to sleep for about a week or twelve.

Seriously, I started this post in May and it's SAT HERE, NOT FINISHED SINCE THEN! *BAD BLOGGER* *BAD BLOGGER*

And here I thought that we'd be finishing out the year on a slightly calmer note, but stuff just keeps popping up. Granted it's all GOOD and FUN stuff, but it's still time consuming stuff. Plus there's that thing called work. Is it wrong that work almost feels like a vacation? Mind you I'm not complaining (not really), more just stating a fact. A very, very, very, time fulfilling fact. #IdleHandsAreTheDevilsPlayground #Reason4782WhyIDontHaveKids

Okay, my calendar might not look exactly like this....but it's pretty darned close!

I hate politics

I may need to call in sick due to election fatigue

Unless you've been living under a rock (or maybe the Bermuda Triangle), you've probably noticed that this year's presidential election has gotten UGLY! And honestly, I'm over it. My Facebook feed is full of political posts, positive and negative, for all parties, and while I have unfollowed a few friends, for the most part I let it go. Why? Because this is America and we have this thing called "Freedom of Speech". Of course I also have the freedom to ignore it, which I have been for the most part. Of course it's hard when those close to you are on the opposite side of your political beliefs. That's the part that really gets me. Because I know what their motivations are, but they are being so narrow-minded and can't see past their own problems to see what would be best for this country.

But I digress. As election day quickly approaches, I find myself burned out. I will still cast my vote in November, because it's my right and because I think this election will be won by hairs so every vote WILL COUNT.

But in the meantime, I will be focusing my energies into more positive and pleasant things, like sharing pictures of corgis on Instagram and leveling up my farm on Farmville 2. Because this is 'Merica!

Our first trip to Disneyland! Part 4: Christmas at Disneyland

Christmas at Disneyland

I love how the Disney parks and resorts do holidays, especially Christmas (there's a reason we got married at WDW in December). Disneyland and California Adventure are certainly no exception, although the Christmas decor was tuned down due to the Diamond Celebration, you could still get into the holiday spirit.

Mater in his Santa hat

My personal favorite was the Haunted Mansion overlay with the Nightmare Before Christmas (we never made it onto It's A Small World to see it's Christmas overlay)
