A madman with a box....

I have a confession....well I guess if you've been following me for a while then it's not really a confession, more of an affirmation....

A couple of years ago I kept seeing friends on Facebook post about this show called Doctor Who. I kind of knew what the show was, but I had never sat down and watched it. We have a Netflix subscription and I was looking for something new to watch so I figured I'd give it a try. I watched a couple of episodes, starting with the series reboot that started in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role as the Ninth Doctor. After a few episodes I was beginning to see what everyone was all excited about. Then real life got in the way and the Doctor took a backseat to my capstone and thesis. Once I emerged with my degree in hand, I turned back to the Doctor and picked up where I left off. From that moment on, I have been hooked. I watched all of the new series, then moved on the what is considered the "classic" series. I have my own sonic screwdriver, I've eaten an entire bag of jelly babies, my Duffy bear I bought at Walt Disney World is now known as The Dufftor, I have Doctor Who related shirts, I have a ton of Doctor Who related pins on Pintrest...I have embraced my inner Whovian.

So why am I telling you this? No reason really, I share so much with you guys, and I especially love sharing things that I'm excited and passionate about. If you haven't watched Doctor Who before and you like science fiction, I highly recommend you give it a try. If you are a fellow Whovian, please share with me! Do you have a favorite Doctor, episode, companion? When did you start watching?

Blogtor Who (Warning! Spoilers!)

And if you find yourself in Chicago around Thanksgiving, I'll be attending Chicago TARDIS! This will be my first time attending a Doctor Who related convention and I am SUPER excited. Not only will I get to hang out with my fellow Whovians, but their guest list this year can't be missed (I'm looking at you Colin Baker!)

  1. Your story is pretty much like mine... except I don't have a sonic screwdriver and I've never had jelly babies. But soon, I will do both soon!

    1. You need to try jelly babies. The texture is a bit weird, and I don't care for the purple ones (the purple makes you think they're grape, they're not, they're something odd like blackcurrant) but I love the lemon and orange ones! I need to get a keychain size version of Ten's sonic screwdriver for the Dufftor, it's always sold out!

  2. I just started watching Doctor Who this season after a lot of recommendations (yours included). We still have cable and I picked it up with whatever BBC America was airing. I followed this past season the closest with the Eleventh Doctor and Clara, but I have seen a few with him and Amy and a few with David Tennant and Donna. I have yet to see any of the Chris Eccleston doctors. Every now and then BBC America will air a classic episode, but I haven't been able to make it through any of those. They read more like a BBC soap opera/stage play than a true Sci-Fi show. I haven't tried Jelly Babies, but I do love jelly candy so that shouldn't be a problem. I also just got my first Doctor Who top for my birthday recently, so I'm slowly catching up. :) I think it's cool that you're going to the fan convention. I can't wait for the pics!

    1. You need to see Eccleston's episodes, it's only one season so you could get through it pretty quickly. "Father's Day" gives you good background on Rose's story. Yeah the Classic series can be hard to swallow if you started watching the new series, it's hard to get past the special effects and funny looking alien outfits. But I really think you'll get into it with time. If you like I can recommend some of my favorite classic episodes that will give you a good taste of each classic Doctor. Sampling is easier than starting with the beginning and going straight through (which is what I'm doing now AFTER sampling each Doctor). At the very least it can give you a good idea of how the show has evolved.

I'm really excited for Chicago TARDIS, I just hope I don't get too overwhelmed. And there will be plenty of pics!

    2. I like the Sample method too. Let me know which ones I should definitely look out for. I'm hoping BBC will have marathons closer to when Doctor Who premieres again.

    1. Well the rebirth of Doctor Who as it were was in 2005, but it's been a British institution since 1963 when it first came on the air. It didn't begin airing here in the US until the mid-late 1970s. Since then it's developed a strong following with each generation, I've been to events where little kids talk about their favorite villain and wave around their own sonic screwdriver. Check it out, if you like sci-fi you'll probably enjoy Doctor Who.

  4. I live here and haven't been to Chicago TARDIS yet. I know, isn't that a shame? But I do love me some Who and I'm excited for the next chapter!
