Cosplay Anatomy: The 4th Doctor

I'm the 4th Doctor

Help me Sarah Jane!

Hat: Forever 21
Jacket: Thrifted
Vest: Thrifted
Shirt: Thrifted
Silk Scarf: Thrifted
Long Scarf: Gift from my aunt
Pants: Thrifted
Shoes: TOMS Desert Wedges

Would you like a Jelly Baby?

I'm not sure how Tom Baker wore such a layered outfit for 7 seasons of Doctor Who. My scarf alone, while it's only 5-6 feet long (compared to his which ranged from 12-24 feet) is pretty warm. Of course I appreciated the layers the day these pictures were taken, it was about 40 degrees outside and I was shivering by the time we were done. While my scarf was made by my aunt for me, there are instructions on how to make a screen-accurate scarf here: http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/

I love this cosplay and is fun to wear despite all the layers. Despite it not being screen-accurate (something I don't focus on much) I love how it's instantly recognizable to any Doctor Who fan.

Cosplay Anatomy is an ongoing series of posts where I breakdown the parts of my various cosplays. This allows readers to find out how I completed the look and how they might go about making their own.

  1. I love all your cosplays! I've been meaning to ask your advice on something. Glasses. I can't see without them and I don't think I could ever wear contacts. There are a couple of characters I've been thinking about trying but they don't wear specs. What's the best way to work around it? Stick to characters that wear glasses? Wear them but remove for photos?

Help me Obi-Wan Rachel, you're my only hope. :)

    1. LOL! Well I'm not sure I can fill Alec Guiness or Ewan McGreggor's shoes but I'll try :-)

I can't wear contacts either, I tried and my eyes are just way too sensitive. If you're totally blind without them, I would just take them off long enough to take pictures if you don't want them being part of the look. For some characters I can get around it because I have prescription sunglasses as well and can wear those for some outfits. Other characters I just don't mind, like my 4th Doctor, if I have my glasses on (I think the Doctor would wear glasses is any incarnation). Others I just deal being glasses-less at least for photos.

Unless you are competing in a contest and "screen accuracy" is important to help you win, I would just do what makes you comfortable. You should never, ever, risk your health and/or safety for cosplay.
