Our first Disney Cruise: Part 4

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

Tuesday was our day at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. We were up early for breakfast, this time at Enchanted Garden. Then we were some of the first off the ship. The weather was beautiful, not as warm as one might expect but still better than home ;-)

We stopped first at the "rental" beach where you can rent things like wave runners, paddle boats and other aquatic transportation. Everyone in the WDW Radio group was going to get together and have a group picture taken, a tradition that started with the group cruise the year before.

All 450 of us!

How they got the picture

After the group photo we went to the family beach which is the next beach over. Castaway Cay can only port one ship at a time and since our ship wasn't full (even with 450-500 people in our group alone) seats were easy to find.

We found a place to put our stuff and then went and got into the water. Chauncey got right in, but for me it was COLD! I did that slow walk in that you know people do when water is cold but with some encouragement (and fear of being dragged in which is what apparently happened to Lou) I finally dunked all the way in. And no only was the water cold, it is SALTY! So if you ever go, regardless of the water temperature be aware that it is salty. We played for a bit on the family beach before heading over to Serenity Bay, the adults only beach. We rode the tram over to SB which quite full of people. We walked about half-way down before finding a couple of free chairs. I laid down to catch some sun and relax while Chauncey took a chair out and sat in the water basking in the calm.

After a while Chauncey walked over to the bar and grabbed us a couple of tropical adult beverages (now I know what Jimmy Buffett is singing about!). This is what we were doing while everyone else back in the USA was standing in the line at the polls as it was election day.

We were contemplating going to find food when Captain Jack Sparrow seemed to appear out of nowhere. He came running down the beach yelling, "Wake up!"

We still had some time before they started serving lunch, so we rented a couple of bikes and took to the biking trails. I tell you what, $6 each to rent a bike (it's supposed to be $6 per 30 minutes but they don't check because we had ours over an hour and only got charged $12 total) best money we spent the entire trip! It was so much fun riding around the island on those bikes, I would do it again in a heartbeat!

One of the bike paths has a tower at the end of it that you can go up and get a 360 degree view of the island.

Most of the island is in it's natural state just like the Walt Disney World property. They only developed what they needed and left the rest for conservation.

All that biking worked up an appetite. Time for lunch!

*UP NEXT: PIRATE NIGHT!

  1. How cool that Capt. Jack just roams the island! Those drinks looked yummy! Were they rum based drinks?

    1. It was cool. We saw him earlier near the family beach having an official meet and great with a Disney photographer but we figured we could see him later. It was funny to see him at the adult beach but I guess that's the fun of it, finding characters in unexpected places.

I believe my drink was rum based with pineapple and some blue stuff that I can't remember the name of. Chauncey's had rum, gin, vodka and tequila with diet Coke. It's a good thing we only had one drink a piece otherwise that bike ride would have been more difficult!
