Movie Review: The Avengers (Contains spoilers!)

(L-R) Hawkeye, Captain America, Black Widow

This past Friday saw the US opening of one of the most anticipated summer movies, Marvel's The Avengers. This movie is a culmination of all of previous movies tied to the characters who appear in this film, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk (although Ed Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo) along with Nick Fury (director of SHIELD), Hawkeye and the Black Widow. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have said I was a fan of comic books and comic book movies, but once I began working on my graduate school project I quickly became engrossed in the Marvel universe and all of the great stories and characters it has to offer.

So if you've seen any of the movie trailers you're probably aware of the general plot of the film. Earth is threatened, in this case by Thor's egotistical brother Loki (brilliantly played by Tom Hiddleston). Loki has stolen the Tesseract, a cosmic glowing cube capable of amazing power, and is using it to bring an army of space creatures known as the Chitauri. Due to this threat, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) activates what is known as the "Avengers Initiative" bringing together some of earth's mightiest heroes. Unfortunately Hawkeye ends up on Loki's control, plus egos and miscommunication (including a BIG secret Fury is keeping from everyone) get in the way and it takes the death of a friend to finally bring our heroes together.

Director Joss Whedon does a brilliant job of bringing together such star power and allowing each member to have their moment to shine. There is plenty of action but none of it is gory, but lots of great explosions and some great action showing off each of character's strongest talents. However there is a great balance with the dialogue, Tony Stark is true to form with many hilarious lines, but everyone gets a joke or jab in which left everyone in the theater I was in rolling in the aisle.

I can't even begin to explain how good, amazing, awesome, crazy, fantastic this movie is. People I know who usually aren't fans of "comic book" movies have had nothing but good things to say about this film. When we saw it Friday night we saw it in 2D, but my husband and I plan on seeing it at least one more time but in 3D....but more than likely we'll be seeing is more times than that.

  1. Nice review Rachel. Jam-packed full of action, humor, special effects, and superheroes, The Avengers is the perfect way to start off the Summer blockbuster season. I hope that Whedon returns for the sequel that they're talking about doing, but then again, it may be another 4 years until we get to see that again. I wonder what will be a bigger flick this Summer: this or The Dark Knight Rises? Can't wait to see that one either!

    1. The producers have said that if a sequel does come around that Whedon is at the top of the list to direct it. It does look like it'll be at least two if not three years though, Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are due next year with Captain America 2 due in 2014 and I'm assuming a Hulk with Ruffalo would come out before A2.

  2. I loved it too! I'm not a huge fan of these Marvel heroes so I didn't expect much out of it, but really enjoyed it. I thought it was hilarious. I almost didn't watch it in theaters (was going to wait for the DVD), but when I learned it was penned by Joss Whedon I knew I had to go see it asap. He did not let me down! :D

    1. Nice to hear! All the people I've talked to haven't seen it I've tried to let them know that it won't be a waste of their time and money. Heck I think I might go see it again tomorrow just because!
